What is Trompe
L'oeil?
|

|
"Trompe
L'oeil", a French
term meaning to 'fool the eye', is something that deceives the eye.
A
clever trick of artistic talent used to create an impression of
space and perspective on any flat wall surface; technically "Trompe
L'oeil"
in mural painting is the illusion created when an artist paints a
three dimensional picture on a two dimensional surface. |
| Trompe L'oeil is a centuries
old European painting technique employing perspective, naturalism,
and shading to create a three dimensional illusion. Trompe L'oeil
is appreciated for its wit and style and can also provide an ideal
architectural solution for space where the actual material desired
is either too closely or structurally unfeasible. Architectural
moldings, vaulted ceilings, bas-relief, or columns, as well s more
pictorial compositions, are all excellent themes for Trompe
L'oeil. Trompe L'oeil implies an optical and three dimensional
illusion while Mural is a general reference to a painting done on
a wall, which does not necessarily contain the elements of Trompe
L'oeil. |

Something Out Of Nothing
The Way of Trompe L'oeil
Like the seduction of explaining the
ancient Japanese riddle, what is the sound of one hand clapping,
defining Trompe L'oeil can be explained as creating something from
nothing. Producing a real definition or work of art from an unreal thing is it's
own magic.
Trompe L'oeil can not adhere to vague definitions, which
may include the effect an observer may believe is reality, but exists
only as an enchanted perception of reality. In this state of
illusion, objects are not objects. The fantastic science of
pigment and shading lures the imagination to wander midst rows of
faux columns or arches.
So, one side of the Trompe L'oeil coin
offers visual and rational aspect, relating to appearance, illusion
and deceit. The other side offers a more evocative and magical
perspective, relating to the mystery and spirituality of the
nature of the human condition.
The Trompe L'oeil technique of using perspective attempts to
puzzle our minds.
The incorporation of optical illusions help us imagine, see, and
evoke spaces, volumes and figures that exist only as paint and
imaginary experiences.
